Although the art of boxing has been around for a very long time, the modern sport that we recognise today can be traced back to 1867 with the publication of the Queensbury Rules. In 1743, Jack Broughton devised the London Prize Ring Rules to govern the sport, and these were revised in 1853. A new boxing code was written in 1865 by John Graham Chambers, and these were publicly endorsed by the 9th Marquis of Queensbury, and published in 1867.
The sport of boxing is not governed by one organisation instead, 4 main bodies have evolved: World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF), and the World Boxing Organisation (WBO).
Legendary Boxing Champions
Boxers are divided up into categories according to their weights, some of which are named differently by the various boxing organisations. However, there are generally Flyweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight, Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, Cruiserweight and Heavyweight divisions.
There have been many famous boxers, including Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sonny Liston, George Foreman, Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, but the most famous of them all is Mohammad Ali (formerly Cassius Clay). He called himself 'The Greatest', was a brilliant boxer and a wonderfully articulate showman.
