George Best was born in Belfast on 22nd May 1946, and sadly died on 25th November 2005. He is remembered most famously for his career with both Manchester United and Northern Ireland. George played 361 times for United and scored 138 goals, whilst he made 37 international appearances for Northern Ireland, scoring 9 goals.
Best was a key player in Manchester United's Football League Championship winning seasons of 1965 and 1967 and, of course, was instrumental in that famous European Cup campaign which ultimately saw Manchester United crowned as European Champions in 1968. Not surprisingly, in the same year, he was named as European Footballer of the Year and Football Writers' Association Player of the Year.
On the International stage George Best would delight the crowds at Windsor Park and who could forget that cheeky 'goal' against Gordon Banks. His greatest moment though came in 1967 when, against Scotland, he put on a individual display that will never be forgotten, virtually controlling the match on his own.
George Best, apart from being blessed with a unique talent for dribbling with the ball, was a complete footballer. He could tackle, head the ball, had pace and vision and, due to hours of dedicated practise, was equally brilliant with either foot.
