After Alex McLeish had guided Blues to promotion the previous season Birmingham City were among the favourites to be relegated. However, after an indifferent start, Blues secured a home win against Sunderland at the end of October which heralded the start of the 12 match unbeaten run, including that tremendous 2-2 draw with Liverpool, the 1-0 win at Molineux, and two creditable draws against Chelsea and Manchester United.
