The return of The Open to Carnoustie
after a gap of 8 years saw arguably the
greatest Championship of the modern
era, won by Irishman Padraig Harrington
in a tense four hole play-off against
Sergio Garcia. The four days of golf saw
high drama, course records and some of
the most sparkling golf ever seen on an
Open Championship course as
Harrington secured the first win of a
major tournament by a European for 8
years and the first time in 60 years that
an Irishman captured the Claret Jug.
