Best Mate had become the first horse since Arkle in the 1960s to win three successive Cheltenham Gold Cups, and in doing so he quickly became the "People's Champion". Tragically though, despite looking in great condition, Best Mate sadly died during his seasonal return at Exeter on the afternoon of November 1st 2005.
