England were the inaugural winners of the first ever Home Nations Championship, held in 1883. Prior to that the England Rugby team had played their first international match in 1871 against Scotland at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh. It was in fact the first ever rugby international and Scotland won 4-1. England's first game against Ireland took place in 1875 and then played Wales for the first time in 1881.

English Rugby Union's finest hour came on 22nd November, 2003, when they defeated Australia 20-17 in the Rugby World Cup Final at the Telstra Stadium, Sydney.
