This is a superb t-shirt celebrating the very best in British & Irish Lions rugby. It features 4, from the many legendary Lions, who travelled to South Africa in 1974 and returned unbeaten! It would be an ideal t-shirt to wear this Summer to help the Wooden Spoon Charity and to demonstrate your support during the 2009 Lions Tour to South Africa
The t-shirt image has been superbly drawn by renowned cartoonist Norman Hood and features Lions captain Willie John McBride (Ireland), Gareth Edwards (Wales), Fran Cotton (England) and Ian McGeechan (Scotland) as they appeared back in 1974.
This t-shirt is not an official British & Irish Lions product but has been produced to accompany our forthcoming 1974 Lions DVD and £1 from the sale of each t-shirt will be donated to the Isle of Man (from where these t-shirts are distributed) region of the Wooden Spoon Society. Spoon is the children’s charity of the rugby world and since 1983 has harnessed the spirit and values of rugby to give disadvantaged children in Britain and Ireland a chance to achieve their full potential in life.
The Invincibles 1974 Lions Tour of South Africa
The 1974 Tour was arguably the greatest in the history of the British & Irish Lions. The South Africans were regarded as the best rugby team in the world and had not lost a home Test series that century. The Lions however won 21 out of the 22-match Tour, winning the first 3 Test and drawing the final Test. The third and decisive Test will always be remembered for the 'Call of 99' which was the signal for all Lions to retaliate simultaneously in a show of unity, "one in, all in", making it virtually impossible for the referee to single out any one player for punishment. That unbeaten 1974 Lions team were soon to be dubbed The Invincibles.
